Some of our recent & ongoing Projects run at TURN Education

TURN Kickstart

Status: Completed
Funded by the National Lottery, Awards for All

The TURN Kick Start Project launched four micro-projects in our key areas. Those not in education or training, homeschooled children, those in care or looked after and young people from any background struggling to access education for a behavioural or emotional reason.

Each micro project provided an 8-week course on-site at TURN where participants learnt to care for our animals and environment, develop skills such as campfire cooking and improve their confidence and resilience. In all projects, the young people were able to consider their own next steps in learning and take action to achieve them.

In total more than 20 young people and their families participated with outcomes ranging from applying for college courses and beginning part-time timetables at existing schools to feeling able to engage with formal counselling and taking bold steps to live independently.

Sunday Project

Status: Ongoing, Group 1 & 2 completed, Group 3 New participants welcome
Funded by Derbyshire County Council, Action Grant (Group 1 only)

Our Sunday project launched originally following a community listening event in which local residents and schools asked us to deliver an engaging, focused and caring project for boys aged between 10 and 15. Sunday project harnessed the boys enthusiasm and energy into purposeful activities that needed to be undertaken at our smallholding to ensure our animals were well cared for, safe and secure. It also had them participate in den building challenges, outdoor cooking and forestry teaching skills in a fun way.

iPads banished, communication and teamwork maximised our boys soon began to lead their own sessions. When the plan for group 2 was launched enquiries came from both boys and girls and therefore group 2 is open to all with a focus on our three R’s Recognition, Relaxation and Responsibility.

We would be delighted to take on new participants so please get in touch to find out more or use the booking button below to book your session. Sessions are 1-3pm every Sunday and cost £7.50 per session.

Connecting Families

Status: Recruiting participants, launched in October 2019 and is ongoing
Funded by: Crowdfunder UK, Staffordshire County Council People Helping People Fund and Waitrose Community Fund.

This is our largest project to date working with whole families not just individual children facing challenges and barriers with a link to education. The focus is on supporting the young person and their family to tackle underachievement and realise new beginnings whilst reconnecting them with each other, their needs and values.

Across a series of sessions the families will learn alongside each other on activities such as Animal Care, Leading and Communication, Forest Bathing and Hedegrow Cookery.

If you are interested in participating or feel a project to help more than one member of your family is something that would benefit you please do get in touch. Our project is fully funded and therefore has no cost attached to it for participants other than travelling to the venue.
